Volunteers not showing up under "People"

I had several volunteers that created a new account on Sunday, but they are not showing up under "People."

The reason I ask, is that what I'm currently doing, which may not be the best way to do it, is going in to "People" and opening a volunteers profile and "Enabling" them as a volunteer so that they can check that box next time they check in so that a name tag will print. Last Sunday we had several volunteers create accounts but they weren't able to print out a name tag right away. Is that the best way to do that or is there a way for them to specify that they are a volunteer when they created their account?

I hope this makes sense. I know I'm probably not doing this right so I would love any input.
