Okay, I use the Check-In alert messages pretty often. If we're having a Friday night concert, I put up an alert to remind everybody. Just this past Sunday, I put up an alert that we weren't printing labels. Nobody is seeing and reading the alerts. Their eyes are so trained to make sure their kids are checked and then to click at the bottom that they don't even notice the extra little box at the top of the page.
So my suggestion is to do one of two things, or maybe even have the option for both. First, I think the alert boxes should have colored backgrounds that correspond to the level of the alert: red, yellow, green. Second, I think the option to make this a pop-up box would be an even better second step. I think more people would notice a bright red box at the top. If I see that they still aren't reading it, I could then choose to make it a pop-up that they will definitely read because they'll have to close it before they can finish the check-in process.
Now, I know that this can slow check-in way down if it's not used properly. But the idea that I can get a simple message to EVERYONE who comes on a Sunday morning is worth the extra 10 seconds occasionally.
